I had an excellent squat session today. Getting ready for a meet in March and switched to 3’s. Hit 200kg x 3 x 3 with just a belt. This and a suggestion from another one of our authors got me thinking- what songs do I choose to squat to? Before all my top sets I select a song from my workout playlist. I pick them for various reasons, from a driving beat that makes my pulse pound to inspiring lyrics that take the intensity in the room up a notch. So I checked out the frequency in which I played certain songs and here is what I came up with….
1) Alice in Chains- Them Bones
This song’s intro and opening verse/chorus just gets me focused on moving some serious weight!
2) Deftones- You’ve Seen the Butcher
@30s into the song when the guitar riff comes in…..love it!
3) Eminem ft. Nate Dogg- Til’ I Collapse
‘Cause sometimes you just feel tired,
Feel weak, and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.
But you gotta search within you, you gotta find that inner strength
And just pull that **** out of you and get that motivation to not give up
And not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse.’
4) Led Zeppelin- Whole Lotta Love
That slide down the guitar and driving beat just pulses energy through the training hall. Strossen would be proud!
5) Mastodon- Curl of the Burl
I don’t even know what he means “curl of the burl”, but it makes the weight on my back feel lighter!
6) Sevendust- Black
That opening hook is just electric. I dare you not to PR with this raging in your ears.
7) Korn- Blind
This song reincarnates every opening ceremony I’ve seen in supercross- yea I’m a gearhead at heart. The images of the pyro and the announcers deep, rumbling voice all dance around in my head. It’s motivating.
8) Motley Crue- Livewire
Yea I was born in the wrong decade. The Crue just brings it home in this track.
9) Filter- Welcome to the Fold
Just gotta sit yourself down to contemplate. You get yourself a nice, cold beer, and drink yourself away. You’re celebrating nothing, and you feel A-OK.
10) Chevelle- The Clincher
So next time it’s squat day throw on your EFS hoody (with the hood up, of course), throw some chalk on your back, and blast some of these tunes. What do YOU squat to?
